About Rockwood: Rockwood is located in the extreme southeastern corner of Wayne County, along the Lake Eire coastline, on the north side of the Huron River. This is a suburban community adjacent to the greater Detroit metro area to the north. (It has a "sister city," South Rockwood, just across the river into Monroe County). It consists primarily of residential areas, with some small businesses and stores along Huron River Drive. It lies next door to the Pointe Mouillee State Game Area, a marshy region along the coast of the big lake that contains several marinas and is a great place for fishing and boating. This community began in the late 1830’s as what was referred as Huron Station. It was renamed Rockwood in 1872 by Canadian settler, John Strong, who named it after his home town in Ontario. It was incorporated as a village in 1926. |
