About Orchard Lake: Orchard Lake is located in the "Lakes Area" of central Oakland County. This area was originally given this name by Indians in the region who called it: "Menahsagorning," or, ‘Apple Place," referring to the many apple trees growing around the lake. A General Joseph Copeland helped organize the town during the early 1870’s, which included the building of the Orchard Lake Hotel in 1872. The area slowly grew and eventually organized as a village in 1927. Today, Orchard Lake retains much of its garden-like atmosphere around the lake due to careful zoning and planning while at the same time demonstrating it’s business strength as seen in its well-developed shopping plazas along Orchard Lake Road adjacent to the old Pontiac Trail.
